I think this culture is very different from the Western culture. The Western culture does not worship goddesses or gods. Some are Christians. The traditional way the Indian's dress is of course different from ours as well. For normal wear they do wear western clothes. They have long dresses from alot of colors and different materials. Most are Hindus, and they worship several gods that bring different values, and for the festival they are worshipping a goddess that brings wealth, prosperity, and good luck. However, to the Korean culture it is quite similar. Koreans have special days for festivals like these. I have never met a Hindu Korean. Korean food and Indian food are different. However I have heard that the Indians use many spices and some foods are spicy, like Korean food. The Korean's traditional wear and Indian's traditional wear is pretty different. Koreans also wear long dresses. I think this article was chosen because we are learning about India. I think this article was interesting because for the first time we have a video to watch. We are learning about India so that's how it relates to something we're learning about in class.

After watching the CNN video, I had learned and felt many things since the culture in India was so different compared to the culture in Korea. They worship Hindu Gods as the new year holiday, but we Koreans don't relate the New Year Celebration to religion. I think India is a country that embraces their religion more than any other country because they wear traditional clothes so casually in the video. They also have extremely strong beliefs in Hinduism. On the other hand, Koreans have mild religious beliefs, and they have modernized as to wear western clothess almost everyday. The food I guess is similar because the food has a strong and spicy and they eat traditional food like us. This blog was chosen to inform of us of the food and traditions of India. This relates to class since we are in the middle of learning about India in our class.

Simply said, India is a very cultural and religious country. In modern society, although people might say it is a special holiday, such festivities and ceremony is not very common everywhere in the world. Of course, religions of India and Korea is likely to differ. However, spending ceremonies with neighbors and families is similar to Koream cultural festivals as well. Nevertheless, the commercial purposes that always comes with festivals was same as any other places. If there is a difference, India is all about commerce of the New year's festival while some other cultures take it strict, or at least, commercial purposes are hidden behind. Foods were obviously different. Koreans would bake rice cakes, but the video's festival was closer to our school's I-FEST with various foods and taking at will. However, the blending with others was was quite the same. Everybody came together to light candles or lamps; Koreans, although they come in smaller groups, come together within a community as well. However, spending the festival with gamble is not common in other countries. I think Mr. Mcallister posted this because it is related to what we are about to study. Since India makes up most of the subcontinent of South Asia, learning its culture would certainly help our studies in our SS8 class.

I think that this is all very cool. (finally, no direct fools) Where else can there be a 5 days celebration that you can simply light candels, eat, and gamble? The only thing this thing lacks is the spirit that makes everyone at least a little bit nicer. Nothing that really puts a deep meaning into people. You simply worship some gods and eat and just be happy. I get the impression that this celebration is just for fun. Mabe before, the gods were more important but now, the people in the movie are just having fun. I really don't get the riches god and people gambling after that. It's weird but then again, who came up with the christmas tree and frosty the snowman? It reminds me of I-fest when people sold indian food. I kinda liked it.
I think that the idea that the celebration started as an economical thing really got me. If it started as a prayer for riches, isn't it based on greed? Then people would get drunk and gamble their lives away and then people will only say that that person was disposed towards the gods.
This celebration isn't too good for christains, this is all about worshipping some indian gods, us christians only believe in THE GOD so worshipping the others would be wrong. But then again, this is perfectly normal for the indians. But since there are almost no taboos there, no strict rules so to say, i would just go there to eat and party. It would be kinda cool. It sort of reminds me of the korean festivals where people just go out into the streets and have fun, if it wasn't for the worshipping and gambling, it would be almost exactly the same.

this article was ".-.probabally.-." chosen because we are studying South Asia, specifically India, this festival is all about India so it fits like a glove, so to say

I kinda like that. The culture is very different. I don't think i would like the food at all though. And by this comment, those who know me in school will probably beable to guess who i am without looking at the number. Anyway, I don't like the fact that they worship many other gods and that they are pretty much allowed to do anything they want on the festival mentioned there. I also see that this website is now in english, well atleast it is for me.

Wow, the subcontinent is very different from the rest of Asia. The people look different, their accent is different, and their clothing is different too. Their festival is celebrated differently than Koreans or Chinese. I think it’s a real interesting festival and it looks really fun. I think the most interesting thing about the festival was the candles (oil lamps) that are on top of each other. The fashion designer, Ritu Kumar, said that the festival was very similar to Christmas and other festivals, and I, at first, disagreed with her, but after hearing her explanation, I agreed that it was similar because it was a time of family gatherings (reunion). I think the most interesting and new thing was the gods and goddess they worshipped. I have never heard any of them either. I guess that is another difference in South Asia with the rest of the world. I also was surprised when I head that gambling was another way of worshipping the goddess of wealth. I wonder what the majority of people worship. I, at first, was thinking how weird the people were for worshipping such a god and goddess, like the old Egyptians, but later I think the reason why they worship is because they are separate from the world and so for that reason, we didn’t hear about them and they hadn’t realized… I think this a real interesting place. However, although it’s really different, I can still make some connections to China and Korea. In China, we also go by a different calendar, the lunar calendar, which is pretty accurate. Also, in Korea and China, there is a special day where you have a family reunion, although we don’t worship or praise a god or goddess at those times… This video changed my mind about the subcontinent a lot. I also thought that they were all poor and uneducated and really different than us, but luckily this video taught me that I was wrong. I think if I were to visit it, I think I would have a real fun time because it’s really different. I think we were asked to see the video and write about it because Mr. McAllister wanted us to see just how different the subcontinent was and what a wonderful place it is. I also think that he wanted us to get interested about it and to show us what we would be learning and the basics.

This is very different from culture in the USA or Europe but there are some similarities to Korean Culture. Like in Korea at the New Year celebrate with giving gifts of money to children it is like how they celebrate the goddess of wealth with gifts and gambling. Which also shocked me that they consider gambling a good thing. They also have special foods for the festival which korea has for both lunar and chusok holidays. they wear traditional long dresses where koreans wear colorful hanboks at the holiday time. This article relates to how we have been studying india in class and learning about Asian culture in general.

They say that they celebrate for te Indian New Year which is on November ninth for 2007. The people in India might not think that it's weird, but I think it's a bit weird to celebrate lunar on November. Sure Korea will celebrate it on February, but at least we celebrate it when it's the beginning of the weird. That guy didn't tell us much about the food, but even by a glimpse, I could see that it is way different from Korean food. It seemed that they worship several gods. And their clothings are also different from Korean clothings. Korea's styles are more westernized, but those people in India (especially woman) wore clothes that are not westernized that much or at all. Perhaps it's because it's a festival time, but in Korea, not much people wear Han-bok because it's a lunar festival. As for religion, Korean people worship God, are Buddhist, or believe in nobody or nothing. But India seems to have a lot of Gods (as I said above.) I also wondered if they worship the Gods all at once, and if they know every one of their Gods. -_-; Anyways, I also think that it would be fun to be part of that five days long festival!

The people wear clothes that look very different from our clothes. If I had to wear those clothes in public, I would be very sad. The clothes look a bit like Korea’s traditional clothes many years ago. The country does have places like fast food stores but the food stores sell them so that it fits in with what the people in that country likes. They also have stores that sell traditional food from their country. There aren’t many Christians and most of the people are a different religion.

I think this was every different from other countries. Also this was very clear to me because I have been to Nepal. THis is my idea but, i really feel sorr for them because like 30,000,000 god and godness. As a chrstian, I think this is okay to do because they do not believe in God. I think korea do things lik this because at the start of a year we go to our olest person's house to pray to ancesters. In Indiathey do that to het rid of the devil and korea, we do it to get protection, wealth, and thing like that. When I wen nepal, it was a poor counry becase they are thinking "after i die, i can live again as a wealthy person" But we christians think we live forever so i think there is a difference in belifs. IN Nepal and the India is very simiar because Nepal and India is very clse to each other and also informations from mom. THey use to wear anythings they are comfortable with but since it is the day of a gettign rid of devils, they have paties and having fun. We koreans wear a long traditionl dress. India is a large country, it is kind of poor. I think they are doing that for their siprital goods butI hope that they will someay beieve in God because we chrisians don't have to do all thoes praying and things. GOd always protect us and always help us. I will love to learn more about this because I am thinking of going Nepal or India again for misson trip so I will love to learn more about it. I think they should put this on November because this is at november. I think it is better to do itat december because then you can start new year with a clean mind and heart thank you

I thought that India has a lot of differences and similarities to Korea and Western countries. First, compared to Korea, India is not that different because we do have celebrations that are traditional but Western culture does not have a lot of traditional celebrations. In all three cultures we have a lot of different religions people believe in and different languages or dialect of the same language. Most of the Western and Korean culture wear western style of clothing but most people in India, especially women, they wear traditional clothing but people in India do wear clothes like Western clothing. The culture is also different because in India most people ride motorbikes and older cars than in Korea. In Korea, during Choosuk people go to their grandparents, usually, and bow while wearing Hanbok, and we usually get a little bit of money. However, in India, they did not bow but worship Gods. Also, in India, they gambled and it was a festival of lights, but I think that in Korea and in India, they both eat a lot of the traditional food of that country. Also, the Indians celebrate Dewali in early November and Choosuk is celebrated in early February. Dewali is not like Christmas where it seen as a time for presents but as a time for a new start. I think a festival like Dewali is good because it does not have strict laws and without the religion part, it will be a festival like carnivals. I think Mr. McAllister chose this article because it shows and tells us more about India not just its festivals and Gods but how crowded and much the Indians keep tradition and not ignore it. This relates to something we have done in class because we are learning about South Asia and India is part of South Asia.

This vedio chlip showed me that the culture in India is very different than the Korea or the Western culture. The calender they count as the new year is even different! However, basic idea and meaning about new year was similar which is enjoying and wishing a good luck for the new year and having good time gathering with your family. I think this thought is same all around the world. I think India is very strict about their gods and belief and they treasure them. The tradition seemed very significant to them and many people enjoyed it and participated. Their ceremonial things were very interesting and made me want to visit India one day:) Korea, and many other countries around the world has this kind of festivals to celebrate. They all treasure different things but in common, they enjoy them and I think many people thinks that spending time with family on these holidays are important.

Mr. McAliister chose this vedio to reflect on because we were just learning about South Asia and since it's new year, it's good to know what other people around the world do that are different from us.

This article connects to what we are learning because India is one of the biggest part of what we're learning in class. Knowing the culture of that country might help us understand better about the region.

The video was fantastic first. What it meant was that traditional festival is not on force but for their own pleasure. I learned that India celebrate foe new year and heading for next year. Also I didn't know that elephant was a great symbol of worshiping. India shows how important is the tradition by the clothes they wear and the lights that glow. I think it will really hard to hang the things their but they are happy about it. I was surprised that new year celebration was really important and looked big than Korea's new year celebration. They eat foods, sacriface foods or pray the god they worship. Korea dosen't have that good thought about new year. I wish Korean will have some more powerful and interesting celebration not just eating ricecake and others. Also, the celebration meant same as Korean with the goal is to play and have fun with their familys and other relatives or freinds.

India's culture is really strange for me. We don't celebrate those kind of culture. In India I could see that there are a lot of religion and one of them is god of wealth and one woman was gambling after going to God of Wealth. It was really strange. And Festival Dewali was very bright because it was about celebrating light and god also, they had lots of fashion shows. The fashion show was very different from koreas and other countries because they were wearing their traditional clothes 9it looked like)
Also, the food was really different. I saw a woman who was eating pineapple on a stick ( i think) it was really strange
it is not their culture but it was
really strange. I want to celebrate that festival too because the night will feel like day because its so bright and beutiful because of the light and the buildings that are full of light with beutiful decoration

Wow, I felt that India people’ living is uncomplicated while I was watching this video. Everyone is looking at the camera! They have no worry about their face showing in TV. If it was in Korea, filming Korean’s festival (I don’t think there is one), people will going to cover their face, being like a mystic. Anyway, that was interesting. This video clip tells us about India’s light festival called Dewail, which cannot be seen in Korea. In the video, I can see people were wearing unique and practical clothes, not like Korean, wearing tight, which makes discomfort, clothes. I also can see people having a sacrificial rite like Korea people do to their ancestors. Looks like everybody enjoys the festival, but maybe the video featured only people who enjoy and have fun of it. Setting aside, this video helped me to know a little bit of India we are studying right now in this class. I feel like learning something about their culture.

I think India has very different culture from Korea. Although usually other countries like USA, Japan, and more, has lot's of similar celebrations. However, not many countries celebrates in the last day of the year. India has special festival, which called festival of light. Indians decorates all over their country with the little candles or lights, and also with huge lights. More than that, during celebration day, they supply lots of delicious foods. India has various kinds of food, like sweet, sour, and especially spicy foods. The similar thing in Korea is that the food culture. It's not the same but we also have lots of spicy foods too. One of the most famous fashion designer had a fashion show. I thought that the fashion show was awesome. In Korea, we just celebrate same days like USA, but others too, Chusuk and more. However, India has light festival that we don't have. Culture is very important to that country. It is hard to invent one, but also hard to change it. Every country has different celebrations and I think it is very interesting thing to learn about those. India's culture is not that easy to understand because it is pretty confusing. Because it is not only celebrating, but people try to show the symbolic things. I think this video relates to our class work because these days, we are learing about South Asia and India is a part of it.

Seems that I'm late...
Well… I’m going to start.
Now I know why India is known as subcontinent. There are lots of differences. It didn’t actually look like Asia. The people look different, accent is different, clothing is different and I think there are more differences if you look deep in to it. The festivals are different then China or Korea. It looks interesting. I think that celebrating their new year in November is kind of nonsense. Well, Koreans celebrate in February, but at least it is actually “beginning” part of 2008. Indian might think that we are weird not them, but you know we got different point of views. But we got to respect other people’s culture. So I can conclude that there is some difference in culture. Let’s move on to food course! They really didn’t talk about their food. However by looking at the video, there came a picture of food. By that I found that it was different. Well, I did hear that they kind of enjoy spicy food as Koreans do. I think that’s it for food. Clothing was really different. Most part of Asia wears westernized cloth. However in India (especially woman) wore their old traditional clothes. In one way I think that I can say that they are respecting their cloth. However in other way I can think that they are not as developed. Also in Korea people can believe in religion that they want to believe. There are Buddhists, Christians, and lots of other religions that Koreans believe. But I saw that most people in India believed different gods. There were different religions, but seemed like that their “main religion” was worshiping different gods. I felt sorry for them… But I can’t really say anything because we have to respect their culture and belief. Well thank you teacher! I didn’t have to read long (and sometimes boring) article this time. I would prefer video you know^-^. Well I am pretty sure that you put this on because we started to learn about India. Thank you!!!>_<

I'm so interseting about this video. I think India has very different culture from korean culture. They has different foods and cloths. But now they are many similar thing between countrys.
The western influence Asia, so that Asia become similar.like bugger king, pizza hut, movie theaters and alot. but all country a has different culture like languages and festivals. Especially India is a Hindus country.I heard that Hindusim can't eat cow meat. They worship cow. Hindusim has a lot of gods and godness. They worship at festival like video. but in korea.
They don't care about religions. But also many Christian worship to God at special day. There are also many people who believe bhuddasim.
but most people at festival like Chusuk and Luner new year's day.
They visit to grandmother and grandfather and bow to their forefather who died before.
This from confucianism.
I think India is believe Hidusim more than other country. It seem like not reall gooooooooooood.

cooll;; I love althose candlestuff: ))))) hahah

I think that I see a lot of difference between our culture and theirs. We Koreans don’t celebrate really wide. We don’t go on the streets and celebrate. We visit our families and talk with our relatives and have dinner. We bow to our ancestors and serve food for them. While, they celebrate a lot on the streets and have parties and pray to their gods. Also they light up candles, by the way their really pretty: ))))), whew! I learned a lot;;;

After watching this clip, i kind of thought that the indian and korean culture are very similar, while the western and asian cultures are very different. This holiday reminds me of like lunar in korea. Im not exactly sure what we do...but it seems very similar to what the people were doing in india. The way the indians dress are becoming more similar to the western style of clothing, although i think that the indian people tend to wear more baggy types of clothing(loose fabric?) and as well as the traditional wear is wayy different. I guess you could say that the westerners have traditional wear if you count the cowboy boots or what the pilgrims wore. But the traditional wear of india is much different. Their traditional clothing is different than any other country, like korea. the food i think, they use the same type of ingredients, but use it to make different foods than korea. and the food in india and korea, are wayy different than teh ones they have in the westen culutre.
but right now, i think that many places in asia, are under the influence of many western things such as clothing, food, and technology?
we are all following more of the western culture, while still following our traditions. i think that its important not to forget our culutre, and still keep practicing them.

The main similarity that i have noticed while watching the clip was that Indians celebrate their new years similar to the koreans was of celebrating lunar. The main difference i think is that the people of India celebrate it involving lights. I think that the indian and korean culture are really different than the western culture. I dont really think that the westerners have a deep culture as the indian and the korean people. Something that may be similar in all three cultures are the way that they dress now. Back then, the Indian and Korean people had very traditional wear, but now a days, we are dressing more and more into jeans and a t shirt. The food in korea and india i think are very similar. They have both spicy ingredients in it. American food i think is different. It is like almost all fast food. But again, as what we wear, we all now as well have alot of the western food in our country as well. i htink that we are suppose to watch this video because we are learning about india.

In this video there were a lot of facts, but it was not that detail. I think it is really different from western and Korean culture. Almost no one is Hindu, and worship the god with elephant head all sorts are unnormal gods. They have a lot of gods, which makes them a polytheism. Most of the religion in Korea ans Western is monotheism, infact Hindu is the only popular polytheism. They wear a special clothing. I think that is normal for them, but it is like a festival clothing with many bright colors. It was quite colorful. In West they usually don't wear colorufl clothes in festivals or party, they wear black and white clothings, like dress or suits. In Korea, Hanbok which is a traditional clothing is not that colorful as India's traditional clothing, it only has few color in top and bottom, and all colors are clear, non of them are mixed or bright that you can't see. In the video India's clothing bad bunch of colors and most of them were bright and warm colors. Korean festivals are kind of like this, but it is more stict and formal, while West and the India is more like a party that everyone enjoys. There weren't alot of part about foods, but Korean foods and Indian foods are kind of similiar because they both like hot foods, but not Western. The festival was more like an Western style because in Korea they don't really decorate alot while party, or any kind of holiday. In India they had hundreds of candles and lights hanging all over the walls. It was more like a Christmas in West. I think this is more like a festival, not a time to keep your self calm. Korea has a lot of holiday that you need to be calm, and peaceful. In the video it said that they were praying and hoping for a good new year. In every part of the world they do that. In Asia, Europe, Oceania, South America, North America, Antartica, and Africa, but i'm not sure with Africa because there is a lot of conlficts and people are just too poor to do parties and festivals for commoners. I think in that day of the festival in India the caste system doesn't really matter alot than usual days. I think there is no division between them, but still i think untouchable weren't alowed to go to a party. I think people just think they are not humans, that is why they have a bin in their neck, and a broom on their waist. They use broom to clean their path that they walked on. A bin for their spits that might come out while they are talking. This video was quite interesting how the India do their festival different from all parts of the world.
I think you put this video because picture is a better way to express than drawing on a mind. Looking at it is more efficient than reading. You put this topic to learn about culture of India, and culture comes from their history. So basically we are going to learn the history and the culture of India.
By the way I think the guy's voice was kind of weird.
Videos were easier to learn, please put more videos, no more articles.

Well first of all I have had some indian experience and lived there for about a year. pertaining to this video I have seen alot of different and diverse cultures in this large continent. The main religion is hinduism alot of gods like Ganesh are worshipped. And in this festical called diwalli I think is a very important festival to the indian culture, because it is very symbolic and it gives pride to indians. It also represents and introduces the indian culture. but I also consider that diverse cultures makes a lot of compulsive attempts because there are a variety of cultures it makes people want to make one cap religion. Also there a re a lot of religions that worship false values something related to the devil in the christian culture. These cultures affect other people. But India has progressed over the years because now hindu is the main culture of india.

By watching the video, I've realized that the culture between India and our culture is diverse and simliar in many ways. In our culture, we celebrate lunar new year according to the Chinese calendar. However, I learned that India celebrates their lunar new year in November. Also, in Korea, we celebrate lunar new year to respect our ancestors and to start fresh and hopeful for beginning a new year. But in India, they celebrate their lunar new year based upon religious ideas and worshipping their gods and goddesses. However, the simliarity that I found was that we both celebrate it as a festival for honor and it is a time to enjoy. The food differs as well. Korean food has changed a lot and it's difficult to find traditional Korean food now, except for traditional holidays. Most Korean food we eat now, are fusion, which is a mix of Korean and other culture's food. Also, Western food is common to find in Korean culture presently. However, India maintains their tradition well even in their food. They mostly eat their traditional food and people still like it and enjoy in their country. But, I've also found a similarity that we both have traditional food on national celebrations. How the two cultures dress show a similarity and difference too. In Korea, mostly everyone in the country dresses in Western style. We tend not to dress like the olden days anymore, like wearing hanbok daily. India wears their traditional clothings more often compared to Korea, but it is not their daily clothing like Korea. India has clothings that covers a large amount of your body, which is different to the Western style of clothing where most of the clothes expose your body. However, recently Indian designers have combined Indian and Western style, which has grown big in fashion. Lastly, Korea has kept only some religions from the past, such as Shamanism and Buddhism. However, we started to have religions like Christianity, that was hard to find in the past. Also, most people don't worship gods or goddesses. But, in India, they worship gods and goddesses, which is common to Indians. Also, it's difficult to find a sign of Christianity in India. They have kept most part of their culture and is upkeeping it even in their modern days. I find it both good and bad that India is keeping their culture well compared to Korea. It is good that they are maintaining what their ancestors have followed, not changing their culture, but it is bad that such as religion, they still believe in gods and goddesses, which disappoint me. I personally think that India is keeping their culture better than Korea and I think they could be a good role model in a way for Korea. But, I want Korea to change in some parts of the culture, which is different from the Indian culture. To maintain a good culture, I think the middle of Korean and Indian culture would be the best. A mixture of other cultures, but maintaing more of your own culture.

Thank you for reading

Watching the video helped me to learn a lot about India's New Year holiday. It was amazing to see so many candle lights during the night. I also noticed that the people were very happy during that time and very busy. This holiday sort of reminded me of a holiday the Mexicans celebrate. I also noticed that Korea and India have a few similarities like the food because we both use many spices and enjoy spicy meals and also the religion. Mainly for the religion Buddhism because Koreans here worship a statue like the Indian people, but I noticed many differences because here, there are many Christians. Anyways, I learned lots of things. Things like the time where I saw people worshipping the “goddess of wealth” during that time and a few others gods. Well, the things that stood out to me the most were the decorations and candle lights. They were an amazing sight. Well, I think Mr. McAlister chose this video because we just celebrated New Years and we were learning about India.

Wow, I think Indian culture is really different from Korean culture. It is quite comfusing and complicated. There are lots of small candles hanging on the air. I think that was interesting. I have never heard of putting candles before. I was surprised by gambling people. I can't believe that people actually gamble during festivals and it is part of the festival. The reason was because one of the god wishes for fortune, so they gamble. It's just amazing for me. There are also traditional foods. I don't know what those foods are, but it should be good. I think this should cost lots of money. There is a purpose of this festival, which is for good luck. I think there aren't any gods and goddesses in western countries. These festivals are really colorful and attractive than other festivals that I know. Korean festivals aren't really colorful. I guess there aren't any other cultures similar to India. I hope I can participate on those special festivals in India.

The CNN video clip was very interesting and fun to watch. I got to see many new things I never knew before. I noticed that there were a lot of differences and similarities between our cultures compared to India’s cultures. First of all, Koreans usually doesn’t worship gods and goddesses. The main religions that Koreans believe in are Buddha and Christianity. It’s very odd and “weird” for me to see a person so devoted to a god or goddess that is only a statue. Most of the India’s people are Hindus and they worship many different gods or goddesses for different reasons. When they were having that big festival one goddess I saw was a goddess that was supposed to bring wealth, good luck, and fortune to you. Second, the clothing that the Indian’s wear is quite different because the design and how they drape it over themselves are not the same as how Koreans put our traditional dress on. It can be similar in a way. The fabric looks similar. But I think that the Indian’s dress is really creative and complex to put on but maybe it’s just how I’m thinking of it. India’s dresses are very colorful and are mixed with a lot of colors that turns out to be a long dress. Korean traditional dresses also wear long dresses. The food that India’s people eat is probably a lot different to what Koreans eat for food. India’s food uses a lot of spices and Korean food does too but Korean traditional food has a BIG difference compared to Indian food. We all have different tastes in food. India and Korea have a bit of similarities and a bit of differences. By watching this short video clip on CNN I learned a lot about India’s culture and it was fun to see.

The Indian culture is a lot different from the culture that we are living in. We are in a Christian community where we worship our one God, but they have many different gods. I found it interesting that a couple of the women that the reporter was talking to said that in their culture, gambling was what everyone did and it wasn't considered sinful. That is a lot different from the western culture because gambling isn't viewed that way. The way that the people there dress looks, from what I could see, more modest than the western culture. The dresses and skirts were all down to the ground and the neck lines weren't very low. They wear a lot of bangle jewelry and other things like that. It was also interesting how instead of celebrating Christmas, like the western culture, they celebrate the light festival. I really liked how the one house that they showed had all of the candles that were everywhere. There were a couple pictures of food that was there. There was lots of food at the party on big platters. And there was also some kind of meat roasting on a stick over a fire. The food looked a lot different from western food, but every culture has it's own food. I found this article interesting because it is about India and because it is the first video post that we've had. I think that we should do some more videos for blog posts because it is a great way to learn as well as reading articles!!

I think this was really interesting. This video's about India’s light festival called Dewail. I think it's really different from Korean culture and it was interesting to see that they have many different Gods. It was interesting to see those candle lights shinning and it looked like the people were happy during the festival. India celebrates their lunar on November, but Korea celebrates it according to the Chinese calender.Another difference was that Korea celebrates lunar to respect our ancestors, and in India, they celebrate it because of religious ideas.
I think this was a good video, and I learnt a lot of new interesting things about India.
And you should give us more video than boring texts!!!

Dewali, the festival of light is like New Years and Christmas to us, only the Indians worship the foward year and their Gods. We usually worship our ancestors instead. They wear Holy clothes and pray to the God and after that, they gamble for the wealth to come into their lives and eat a festive meal. On the other hand, we eat Rice cake soup, play many traditional games and spend the night waiting to turn a year older. I was surprised with the fact that they gamble because I thought the act of gambling was forbidden to Indian's culture and it was like a sin, but they gambled on a day where they worshipped the Gods.
I was also shocked when I saw the designed clothes mabe by Ritu Kumar. Unlike other countries, the clothes were made of the same Indian traditional cloth material, design, accesories, and much more. In our traditional culture, we wear Han-beok but there are not alot of cases were designers use traditional clothing for their clothes. The flower necklace that were hung in the shops also was beautiful and colorful; same with the oil lamps in the wooden cups. In the Korean New Years, decorations are not included and Christmas is not a holiday that started in the country, but was sent from other regions. After watching the video, I learned more about India's exciting festival cultures, clothing, religons and customs. These all impressed me because it was much more than I'd expected it to be.

This video focused on the culture and the livings of Indian people. I knew that they were different from other countries first of all, I knew that they worshipped many gods and had very diverse languages. their clothes style is not western and they look kind of poor. I know its just because that the GDP is lesser due to population, but still theylook poor. THey also have many festivals and i think they are kind of similiar to Mexico.
Anyways since we are learning about India, this gave some breif information about how Indians celebrate religious ceremonies and their cultural way of living.

It’s pretty cool about the light and gods. The festival is kind of strange. I never knew you have to light up all those candles to celebrate to the gods. Well I believe it is best to respect all religions so I think that the festival is used to drive demons away from their houses. I never knew that different gods bring different stuff. In my country there is things like that which is pretty cool too. I am pretty happy to learn about India and its culture.

After watching this video, I have learned that we are not at all different. United States and most of Western Cultures celebrate Christmas and New Year, and China also celebrates Lunar New Year from the beginning of the Lunar year, till the fifteenth of that lunar month. Korea celebrates both New Year and Lunar New Year, almost like a combination of original Asian celebrations of Lunar New Year, and Western New Year in January 1st. Similar to the celebrations of many other cultures such as Western Cultures, Chinese, and Korean in a way they celebrate their religious belief like Christmas, celebrating almost like Korean Chusuk or western Thanks Giving depending. It is apparent that all cultures have some sort of vacation time, a break time for religious or monumental periods, and I must say it will be great to visit India during that time. Also the food looks awesome! It beats US turkeys and Korean stuff~ i mean LOOK AT THAT BBQ!!!!!

I am very surprised at this video. I had no idea that India had this kind of festival. This is kind of like Lunar New Year in Korea. Watching this video, I suddenly felt a feeling of sorrow because of the gods they worshipped, such as the goddess of fortune. When the fashion designer explained about this festival, I felt kind of sorry for the Indians because since 80% of India is Hindu, there are millions of people that believe in Hinduism, and the same feeling for that as for my grandparents, not because they're Hindu, but because they don't believe in Christ. The population in India is huge, and the population might probably catch up and even go over the population in China. This many people are on their way to hell. I feel very sorry for these people. It is the Christian people's duty to go out into India and other parts of the world to proclaim the Word of God and spread the Gospel. Not only in India, but also everywhere in the world. Since my parents are missionaries, I seem to have a relation with them in becoming a missionary myself, possibly in India. Watching this video, my heart went out to these people of India.

i was very surprised wen i saw india. .i thought india was like still very dirty and uncivilized. after i saw the movie i was thinking that india was a cool place to live in and i want to visit india once. the culture is same and different at the same time. Like the light festival. the light festvial was liike our christmas or new year where our families meet together and we light fireworks and so on. the way of dressing is different. indians mostly where tunics, rags or not erawlly casual clothes but more 'comfortable' clothes and i kind of like that. the food that they eat is kind of different from the american or western culture too. they eeat like food from like nature and probably more healthy food. in america they mostly eat fast food which is mcky ds or taco bell or burger kind and so on. the indians look very happy too. they have a lot of faith in their celebrations, like that woman who had this place full of thousands of candles that could be lit up from anyone that wished to light it up. after watching this short clip i hav a new picture of india in my head and i wish to visit india atleast once in my life...

WOO HOO! The festival of Dweli is the most funnest and brightest festival ever in India. It is not only a festival of celebrating News Years Day but it is also for worshipping and praying to God. It is celebrated for 5 days. The food is really great, especially because it is Indian Food. I had tasted Indian food before and it is really great. The festival of Dweli is about destroying the darkness and bringing light. This festival means to people to get with families and have fun. There are many gods that they worship and they do things to honor the gods like gambling. It is a message of hope and friendship and prosperity. I think that the festival is fun. I wish I could go to the festival once and eat the food there. I think that the food would be great. I learned many culture of different countries, like India and China. I learned the culture of China in Mandarin Class and the culture of India from S.S Class. I think that this helped me to expand my knowledge on culture and helped me to learn many countries.

after i finished watching this video. i was very interested about the indian's festival. they celebrate many gods and they hang the candles, when i saw the candles it was really beautiful. i think the culture is very different to the korean culture or USA culture.

I thought this video was really cool. I liked the part where they had the fashion show with people modeling different kind of Indian outfits. There were some who had like really colorful jewely robes that were like floor length and had long long sleeves. Other models had like these kind of belly dancing dresses that were all covered in sparkling jewels and sequences and all the colors of the rainbow. They were really beautiful clothes. Then there were some who had more like Americanized clothes, but with a touch of like the sequency colorfulness to them. I really love the Indian culture because it's really a lot different from America or Korea. It's not like weird different but it's really beautiful and ....cool different. I like it a lot. I also loooovveee the Indian food. They showed a lot of it when they showed that festival thingy and I was like really hungry. I've never been to India and had the actual food there,...but I've been to Indian restaurants and that was really yummy!! I love this festival thingy because not only do they where like these totally amazing outfits and eat totally amazing food, but it lasts for like 5 days!! Man, compared to our holidays this little tiny festival thing is totally da bomb! I think it's kind of strange that they had like different gods or goddesses for everything, like goddess of wealth or whatever. We are learning about India in social studies and we're learning about Gandhi and so that's why this little movie news thingy was put on here. I really liked the idea of putting movies on here that you can watch and stuff than just written stuff. It's a lot more easier to tell what's going on and you can reflect on it a lot more.

The most unique or maybe worst thing about India is that their culture's traditions and ways have embedded in their society so deeply that it can't become like commercialism in America. It has to be the way of the culture in India, but in America, it doesn't need to be since America changes alot in cultuure. America is too diverse. Too much freedom. In India everyone lives based on tradition because it has been their way for soo long. Only for a true Indian. But it is fascinating for some random reason. In Korea we don't have specefic culture. Our culture is deeply influenced by the world. We think the world has better stuff than us, which makes us develop towards it. I think we should make a specefic Korean culture. We are rich. We should now think of culture other than business or technology.

Indian culture is rich and diverse and as a result unique in its very own way. Thier manners, way of communicating with one another, are one of the important components of our culture. Even though they have accepted modern means of living, improved our lifestyle, our values and beliefs still remain unchanged. A person can change his way of clothing, way of eating and living but the rich values in a person always remains unchanged because they are deeply rooted within our hearts, mind, body and soul which they receive from their culture. Indian culture treats guests as god and serves them and takes care of them as if they are a part and parcel of the family itself. Even though they don’t have anything to eat, the guests are never left hungry and are always looked after by the members of the family. Elders and the respect for elders is a major component in Indian culture. I believe that the festival is very unique. Worshiping the gods but having fun at the same time. I believe this video fits into out unit of the india's history it introduces us about the modern culture.

Hey, 02719 here,

I could see clearly that India is very different from American, or even Korean culture. I was amazed at how many cnadles that lady hung up in her door way. I mean, there must have been hundreds, maby thousands of cadles, adorning her house. I was slighly disterbed at how gambling is part of their festival, the guy said he thought it was sin, and she replied: "In your culture, not in ours!" I was amazed at how many people were just walking around. I sure wouldent miss an oppertunity to go see that festival! =)

sorry for the late post MM, it wont happen again.

After watching this video, I was amazed how India has very different culture from us and is very creative. ANd I could see clearly that what we wear, eat, and speak are way different. Korea don't have Hindu religion. And I think India is a very cultural and religious country. They value worshiping their gods and following tradition.
I could also see some similarities that we both enjoy holidays and cremonies. This video was very informative and was easier to understand.

I feel sorry for the Indians. They are still very strict about keeping their cultures. Korea seem to loose their cultures these days. We don't wear han-bok (Korean traditional cloth) not much as before now. I see that most of the Indians are not Christians and believe on strange things. In the other hand, many people in Korea are Christians. However, I love the Indian foods. It is strange but it has something special about it, i especially like those Indian breads. Indian foods seem to look to contain more of salts, however Korean foods contain more of spicy things. They also do fire works on their holidays (New Years) like Korea. Throughout the video, I've notice that India is also loosing their bits of culture: The dots on their forehead. Young people do not have those things on their foreheads.

India is very different form other parts of Asia. They have different races, different culture, and different use of language. And their festivals are differently celebrated with East Asia. it is so cool that Indians put candles on each others head during the festival. how god and goddess worshiped was very interesting.I never heard of these and it was a new thing to learn. It was very surprising when I read that gambling is one other way to worship god. However after reading this blog, I felt that Indians were weird. But after thinking that if they believe those beleifs and have those festivals, I thought the Indians worship god and plays in the festival very exciting.

Actually i am very proud of my culture. We don't hold on in tradition as much than other countries. And I'm proud of that. Traditions usually corrupt some people. Our country has high chances of creating people who are good.

Anonymous said...

Do I have to write differences and similarities to Korean culture or western culture??? I'll just do to Korean culture.
In India, they worship gods, but in Korea, only people who has religion worship god. And in Korea, people wear clothes that is from western culture.(Korean wear their traditional clothes(Hanbok) only at Korean holidays on these days). In video, they were wearing their clothes, and their traditional clothes were different to our traditional clothes(Hanbok).
Also, foods are different. I know India food. I think I went to Indian restaurant when I was kid. As long as I can remember that it smelled and tasted strange. It was really different to Korean food. But both country(Korea and India) eats eastern food(ex.rice). And also both countries have their own holidays.
