I really like that island. It was very beautiful and peaceful plaece. But it had serious problem. Their island were sinking. Already many part of island had sunk. Because of this problem people eat only rich, coconut and soon it will be dried up. But i really surprised at what they said at this moment. They said however only God knows what is going to happen next. They still believe God in this bad situation. If this problem continuance than their childern will be very hard to survive and that is sad, they need a help.
It is very sad that the island is sinking. It´s quite a surprise that beautiful island had a serious problem. This happen because of the global warming. This is very big problem. Other island also had sunk because of global warming. If this problem doesnt solved every people who lives in the small island will not able to survive. I hope this problem should be solved quickly.
I found out that this is mostly because of global warming because you could see here that all the glaciers in north and south pole melts and all the ice turns into water. The islands would eventually at kast become water and even maybe the whiole world would become water after 100 to 200 years or more. That is why more scientists and professiors are founding out a way to live in "water land" ior plan to live in the water. This is very hard and complicated because the most importan thing, the oxygen is not enough in the water. Well enough for science and I really feel sorry and sad becasue some islands such as isalnd there is very beautiful. I wish that some day, opeople could develop a way to stop globasl warming. Becuase of country sych as Korea, America, or Europe that is city country, the oil or fuel that is used up affects country such as Hawaii or small and island country that is surroned by water.
What a sad story!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The global warming became more serious issue to human beings. Because of the selfishness of human beings created environmental problems. Many parts of island sunk by melting the glaciers. The island people lost their lands and foods. The garden were swollowed by sea water. One day, they would have to move to the mainland. One of them said "I miss my island and I am sorry to this island" This sentence shocked me that all environmental problems started by humnas' selfishness, actually humans are part of the nature that the prblems return to us.
I feel sorry for the island and the islanders who live there. They should be frightened about their home sinking within few years. This island is called Carteret Island and this island was naturally close to the sea level. It means if there is a little cyclone on that island, there would be a serious flood everywhere. So if the sea level increases constantly every year, obviously the island would sink. It's just the matter of time takes to sink the island completely. A lot of people think that increasing sea level doesn't have to do with global warming, because they know that the amount of water with an ice cube wouldn't change even if the ice cube melts. This is definitely true, but there is more to it. The glaciers and snows on the Poles, especially Antartica, where there are a lot of glaciers on the ground. If they melt, it would make a distinct difference on the sea level. Anyway, I think we should feel sorry for the islanders because we caused global warming.
another uh ohh.........there are so many natural disasters going on!!!! especially these people are in danger becuase they are living in a small island, which if the water covers up the land, all of they belongings as well as them selves will be destroyed and hurt. I hope this would stop so that the people who lives here can live in peace and eat various kinds of fruits other than coconuts. they lost so many things and they can do nothing about it. not many people live there and it is hard for a group of people to go and help. however, i hope they don't give up and still have hope. they were having their own happy life, and in this undeveloped area, this disaster just killed everything. even their joy. they are worried about their future and their children. i really hope that they will soon have some good solutions for them.
we are just about to start learning about these island. by looking at what is happening, we can have a somewhat preview and also pray about it. this connects to our class because these island are included in pacific islands. however i look forward to learn more about themmmmmm
THANK YOU FOR THE VERO TRIP TODAY MR MC!!!!!
Such a sad story to hear. The island was their home for many generations. Their founding fathers lived there peacefully with no harm. However, as time passed the island kept sinking at a fast rate. This was primarily due to the melting of ice because of maybe global warming. Just 30 years ago, there was not much pollution for the demand of burning fossil fuel was not that great. These people will have no choice if the Island is going to sink at this rate but to move. The leaders of the island have already planned an evacuation plan. Because of the flood the gardens where people grow fruit and vegetables are destroyed as seawater touches the garden. All they have left are the coconuts. Boats come in from time to time to transport rice and food but that is not enough. They will have to move eventually no matter what. I think this story inspires people not to burn excessive fossil fuel. Also it shows us that we should pay attention to the disasters going on in small islands that may not seem that important. The bog was posted to show us the disastrous effects of excessive fossil fuel burning. It shows how it dramatically changes the remote people's lives. It relates to Oceania because we are starting to learn about the chapter. Most of Oceania is small islands that are pretty unnoticeable. It gives us an insight on the tragedies going on in Oceania. I think that when the people move to the mainland they will have a hard time trying to get accustomed to the life on the mainland because it's more modern.
If the owners of factories were 'people' and the saw this, they should shut down their factories imediately. what do you think is more important, a bit of money or the houses and homes of so many people. We are destroying the world that was here for millions of years. i can't beleive those people want humans to be the fall of life on a whole planet. Global warming is probably really hard to stop but it's worth stopping for the sake of the world.. duh! i don't get why people are suggesting that global warming doesn't even exists. what else could be the cause of the water level rising, the island can't just start sinking so quikly if it was sinking, then it should have been sinking for millions of years. the island is not he only thing that is sinking, either. lots of the things are sinking like venezia and island countries.
When thinking of 'paradise' it is closely related with islands, hammocks, coconut trees, and palm trees. Either fortunately or unfortunately, these islands are just the stop. They are just like the beautiful, clear beach-islands that are in Pirates of the Carrabean. Unfortunately, the islands are sinking, almost literally. Either that or the water is rising. Nonetheless, both ways involve the flodding of those paradise islands. I feel very sorry for them because not only are they ignored by help agencies and such like the earthquake, or even because they have to ear coconut and fish three square meals a day, but the fact that it is inevitable. In the earthquake, the people could now on deisgn earthquake resistant buildings but the islands are definetly going to flood no matter how many research is done. It is strangely stupid when you think about it. Salt water is driving people out of their homes, but its true. As said when we learned about Australia, water with a lot of salinity (salt) isn't good for crops and not onlyis the salt water destroying their staple foods, it is flooding the place completely so later not even coconut can grow. It is from paradise islands to civil war city that they have to move to. It must feel wierd that they used to farm but now they are in a city, food avaliable but not peace. Cartaret islands, its called. It mildly unreasonable that there are no aid or even researchers helping the people. Save for a ship every once in a blue moon, they almost have no contact with the outisde world (except for the CNN people who made this video footage. Its almost a given that global warming is the cause of this. Since other shorlines have advanced (although maybe not as drastic as this), this cannot be something special to this area. It's just not reasonable that the land is sinking, so it must be the water rising. That would mean that more water is entering the oceans and that water would most definetly be coming from the ice caps up in the arctic/antarctic regions. This is all very sad, the people are drivin out by their own nature.
--
Ithink this was chosen because it is a strange, yet current problem. It's connected to global warming and that is a big current issue.

this is related to what we are talking about in class because it is about a country in Oceania, which we are currently studying
Firstly, I cannot believe that not even once scientist is trying to think why that island is sinking or why is the ocean getting higher. For the latter, the scientists might think that it because of global warming. However there may be other causes. If there are, then they should try their best to keep the island safe for the residents. The island is too good to just sink.
Secondly, it must be really depressing for the residents of the island. It is horrifying when I imagine that Korea would suddenly sink one day. But then, if the island keeps sinking, then the people won't only loose their homes, but they would also need to learn how to survive in another country. It said in the video that there aren't any televisions or computers in the island. It would mean that the people of the island don't really know much about the outside world. It would be hard for them to live as well as they are right now.
And lastly, the people should get ready to leave because if they just stay there in the island, then they would drown. They would all drown. Even if they don't drown, how can they live eating coconut all day long? I don't know how sad they are because I am not one of the people, but they should just forget their sadness and leave the place.
I think that what is happening to the island is a very serious problem and it might be showing us how much damage us humans are actually doing to the earth. There have been other problems that have shown this too, such as global warming, various natural disasters, and so much more. I feel so sad for the families that have to leave the island because of what is happening because that is their home, and it was their parents home, and their parent's parents home and so on. They have to leave behind everything that they've grown up with and start a whole new life in a new culture and everything! That would definately not be easy and I don't know if I could do it. It is a mystery as to why the islands are sinking, but I hope that scientists and others can find out why this is happening so that we may prevent it from happening in other cases where possible.
I think it is really sad that the islands are disappearing under water through global warming. I knew that global warming was already a serious issue, but I didn’t know that land was already disappearing through it! I feel really bad for all the people who live in those islands for many different reasons. The first reason is because now, most of the people have to eat coconuts and fish only because their farmland has sunk under water. Another reason is because the island now has malaria because there is water on the land. Finally, I feel terrible for the people because they have to evacuate their home and move to mainland, which means that they have to start their lives all over again. I think that is part of the reason why some people aren’t moving. Hearing the people living in the islands makes me really sad and a little ashamed because it makes me realize that we were the people who created global warming and yet, we aren’t doing anything. I think that if we don’t do anything SOON, then, not only the island, but other parts of the world will soon be sunk under water. I think we were told to watch the videos and comment on them because we are learning about the Pacific Islands in social studies class.
I find it sad that the islands are sinking. Imagine being on an island, and finding out that your whole life was being destroyed! If I were an islander, I don't think that I would beable to leave the island that easily and go live on the mainland with minimal problems. I wouldn't want to give up my home! I can't imagine how hard it would be for the islanders to get off their home island.
I feel really sorry for the islanders. They dedicated their life on the island but the ending is so meaningless and vain. What I found that was very surprising was that the islanders treated the island like human. The islanders treated the sinking island as dying human. This shows that many memories had been placed in that island. I feel very sorry for the islanders and the island.
I thoght that the island was so beautiful. They have said that they had more land and more food but because of the rising actions of ocean, the islanders had to suffer because they don't have enough land and also they don't have enough food to survive. We should try to help them maybe providing them new place to live and also if that is not possive, then we can try to at least provide them with food. If that is not possible too then at least we can provide some sand and make some human made island and plant some trees and farms. I think if we help them then we all could have happy life
I can't believe that the islands are sinking. It is a beautiful place and they said they only live on coconuts and rice, and that the banana trees are dead. I cannot live without bananas. I think that more people should help out these people who are suffering from their islands sinking. Also, more scientists should consider why the islands are sinking and see if they can prevent it from sinking even more. Its amazing that they are sinking but what is more amazing is that no scientists and people are caring about it. These islands are a proof of the serious effects of global warming. I think that all that is happening around the world, this is another problem we are facing because of our mistakes. I think that it is important to recognize their hope still in the islands.
This relates to what we are learning because this islands are in Oceania.
It is really sad that the island is sinking so that they are gradually covered up with water. They have no food to eat but maintain their life only with coconuts, rice, and bananas. Bananas will not exist later when water fills the island. I am so shocked that only have those three things to eat. I feel really bad because I even sometimes complain with foods but they don't even have food to complain. I like that island because it is very beautiful. People in that island always have hope inside them that that the island will stop sinking and become a beautiful and peaceful island. I think they are better (a lot) than people in this world who has everything with them because they are so selfish. People in this world always complains about everything without thinking those people in that island or other poor countries. They never feel thankful that they are so blessed. As I said, so do I. No one is trying to find out what's happening to that island and what they can do for that island. Because I'm not a scientist, I can't find out why it is happenignt but maybe I or ms students can donate money to get them foods. I hope that I will get a good news about that island soon.
It is really sad that the islands are sinking day by day. It will be really hard to live in a place that sinks almost everyday. The scientist should try and find a way to solve this problem so that the people wouldn't die. I like the plan the made by taking 10 families at a time. It is hard for me to live the computer, so that means that it will be harder for the families in the island, I hope that no one dies.
These small islands are a home for thousands and thousands of people and the islands are all sinking down. This is such an tragic event where they need to evacuate from their home town. They will not be able to get anymore freedom of what they had. The cocunut trees and bananna trees are all ruined by the sea water flowing towards the land. Some islands have already sunk however scientist belive in the year 2015 most of the pacific islands will sink into the water. People blame the global warming as a cause of the sinking however it is not true. I believe that we should help the people in the pacific islands because they cannot harvest any crops due to the sea water destroying it. I hope God can make a blessing to the people and find them a land that the people can be comforted.
I think this is a warning of nature. These days there are many tragics happening in the world and it is very sad thing but i think we deserve it. We destroyed the nature and the nature is having a come back. I love this island and i want to go travel there and have some rest but because of the global warming, the ocean water is keep increasing and the water is overlaping the island by destroying the trees because of the salt water. I want to be cured and promise to land, we wont bother you again. I think in this situation, you should pray to god and ask for help and confess your sin to him and he will forgive us and help us.
I really loved how the island was so beautiful, but the fact that it is sinking was a very horrible disaster. When the woman in the video said that the water is comming closer and closer to her, I wondered how she can not be afraid to live there. Big waves might damage the whole island! I learned how serious global warming is to the island, and really hope that there will be less damage to that beautiful island.
I think there few reasons why this kind of problems happen to these beutiful islands. First my thought is the global warming, it might be just a theory that might possibly be wrong, however I believe in that this cause was because of us, human beings. We developed Earth, but because we hurrying too much we polluted Earth, which made a hole in the layers that protect earth and the light from sun passed throught the hole witch made Earth hotter. Than it melted the ice in the South and the North Poles. I think the cause of the "sinking" island was because of the melting glayciers from the Poles. I think we should slower our developments or it will sink the whole Earth, or we should take care of the nature of Earth or islands of even other big islands will sink.
This is incredibly sad. There are so many things going around the world, and most of them aren't the "good things." The theory about this "shrinking island" is that because of global warming, the tides are getting higher and so then the tidal waves would get closer and closer to the islands and the island seems to look like it's sinking. I don't think that I would like it very much if one of those islands was the one place where I lived my whole life. I can't imagine the sadness I would have to face if I had to face this problem. The one part that really touched me especially was when the one lady said that even though her family and her had to face this problem, she would trust God whatever happened, and that whatever happened, it would be God's will for them, and he would turn it into something good.
Hey! 02058! I am actually a strong supporter of global warming theory, but we (as in like all of us) must remember the fact that there is a possibility that it may not be true. As of yet, global warming is still a theory so... to state something upon the belief global warming is a fact would be wrong. BUT don't get me wrong, I am a strong supporter of global warming theory.
Back to the subject, it is sad that the ocean level is rising (the islands are not shurinking), resulting the decrease in above-sea-level land in many islands.Even with the acknowledgement of the fact that this would result in mass lossage in habbitat, culture, and the respective oceanic people's live style. However, this is nothing if this global warming is to get worse, for it is proven that if the ice sheets on Antarctica and Greenland was to melt it would result it near 100 meter rise in ocean sea level which would leave over a half a billion people homeless world wide (From national geographics and scientific american). But before that happens probably the input on fresh water in the delicate salt water balance of the thermohaline currents will bring the ultimate scenario of new Ice Age, but that is totally beside the point. We must be thankful that atleast as of now, it is relatively small area, compared to what the ocean level rise is capable of causing. We must learn a lesson and start an immediate action to slow this process, and if possible reverse it. If all is lost, atleast a relocation program must be planned ahead for 100m rise in ocean level would totally flood Florida, Shanghai,Manhattan and alot of world's major cities. Especially considering many of major cities are made on ocean border, this would mean disaster.
The planning starts now.
The action should start.
Stop Global Warming.

Why do people, who have no relation with Global Warming in any directions, far away in Oceania have to be damaged of rising sea water? Watching island sinking and being destroyed, sinking of home where those islanders live and their ancestor lived is too horrible to think of. What they, islanders, will think looking at the rising sea level? Can they easily go and look for another place to live? Leaving all those beautiful scene (that now have been destroyed), familiar places might not be easy as we can simply say. Also, it would be hard to adapt with the way of life in different space. They are taking too much risk. This should not be happened in any situation.
It is a sad thing that the low islands are sinking. I didn't know that islands were sinking and that this happens because of the global warming. I hope this problem will get solved, if this countinues then the islanders living there will not be able to survive. I think this problem mainly came from humans. So we should solve the problem.
Tragic and Sorrowful. I think that many people would have felt these feelings watching the videos. I have seen these videos in class time already, but watching it the second time makes me feel more sympathetic and sorry. I cannot imagine how it would feel like to be watching South Korea sinking steadily, knowing that I love living in Korea and I would never leave my home. I understand how many of them want to stay knowing that the islands are eventually going to sink. It is difficult to leave where you love and especially knowing that the islands would be gone, and no one would be ever to return to them. Some of the islanders have actually started to move out and live in the city, but there must be a lot of difference between living in the islands and in the urban areas. It may take many obstacles for the islanders to adjust to their new environment, and it is happy to hear that people who have gone through the same experience, like the counselor in the video, are willing to help the islanders. The videos notice us that the islands are already in the stage of sinking. It seems like the islanders are having many difficulties and struggles of continuing life on the islands, since they are having problems of limited food like eating only coconuts to survive. Even though they may have people to ship their supplies of food and needs, it seems like it is way too little for the islanders to survive. Also, it is hard to maintain the condition of food, especially in places like the islands, so I think some food may become rotten and unacessable to be eaten. Furthermore, I think the title CNN has chosen for the videos are very good of how they express the feelings of the islanders. The people who may be watching and hearing the news of the islands may feel sympathy, but we are not able to understand how paiful it is, like for the earthquake incident in China. We would not be able to comprehend how it is like to have the "sinking feelings" of the place that is your home. People around the world should be aware of what is going on, in these islands, and reach out a hand to help. We should not be just watching and have sad feelings for the islanders, but actually reach out to be realistic. I think the only way to help solve the problem is to support or help the islands ASAP! Also, I have learned that we should not take things for granted and be thankful that we are fortunate to live in a safe place, Korea and not worrying of how we are going to survive tomorrow.
What makes me think and wonder the most is that I don’t understand how the island is sinking. How is there so much of the ocean coming into their islands? Also why aren’t there scientists going there to research and to figure out what happened? This blog topic makes we wonder about many things. I’ve never heard of an island sinking before. So many crazy things are happening in this world nowadays. Now I am guessing that it might be because of global warming. Global warming is already doing very scary things to this Earth. So many things are being destroyed because of it. Anyways, I feel really bad for the islanders because their ancient home is going to be extinct forever and they can’t do anything about it. When I saw the place that they were going to have to live in because their beautiful island is sinking looked very horrible and scary. Their island looked so calm, comfortable, and very peaceful compared to their future home. The islanders look so happy living on their island and the elders especially will probably not want to leave the island that their ancestors lived in. Soon that island might become just a memory to them and then there can be a possibility that no one will remember about it anymore. I just wish that there can be something done with the situation. Can’t someone figure out how to stop it from sinking? These clips were very sad to watch because I could see the fear and the sadness in the islander’s eyes.
i think that it is tragic how the islands are sinking and that this is showing how real global warming is and that we must try and stop it before it is too late. I was not very aware of global warming before this and all its bad effects on people. But now i know how horrible it really is and that it is making it hard for these people to survive without outside help where they once thrived before.
This relates to our class because we are learning about the Micronesian Polynesian and Melanesian islands.
After watching this video, I was really shocked of how much water was rising. And it is sad to see that the island is slowly sinking. Even though it is, many of the people say that they would rather die and sink with the island than leave it. So as you can see, the people there are very close to the island because it has been part of their history for so long and just watching it sink away is really painful to watch.anywayss, i agree with many people that they are all leaving it up to God and they are actually believing in him in this situation. well, this really inspires me because now I realize how blessed I am.
These Islands in polynesia are shrinking mainly because of the global warming which causes the glaciers and ice caps to melt and eventually end up in these islands because of weather processing. Scientists say that all of these Islands will soon be sunk in to the sea in ten years. But there is also another cause, the plate tectonics are apart of this scenario. The plate tectonics moving and bulging are constantly getting wider making the land sinking, and because of this theory it builds 2 times the speed of the Island to sink, because you have got sea level rising and the land sinking. This catastrophy however still doesn't make the people want to leave because of their memories, dedication, and it is their redisidence, they have everything they want which is palm trees, coconuts, bannanas and fruit farms. But since the catastrophic event occurred seveerely attacking the Island, they actually started to evacuate people, because they had a sense of leaving the island. Now there is hope for the people to survive, I hope no other apocalyptic catastrophy happens making the Island sink faster.
In this island, it used to be one island, but now, because of the high tides, most of the island is covered in water now. The rise of the sea level is the cause of this happening, and in a few more years, this island might be covered in salt water after all. I think they were brave to survive and live through this place, and living until now. I think it would have been hard and I would have looked for another place to live. However, I think that these people are courageous and that they believe in God, waiting for hope on the island.
Ok Mr. McAllister this is not ok. Putting two sad news together makes me really depressed. I mean we have so much things going on in school and you are just giving us all this sad news. I need some good news Mr. McAllister! Well, this is really sad. The island was beautiful, just beautiful. But this beautiful island is disappearing. It is sinking. No one knows why the island is sinking, but there has already been island that actually sunk. Since the waves are coming in and out, the roots of the tress are being dug in and lots of trees have fallen down. I can’t believe this is actually happening. But I really hope that God has reason for letting this happen and I was really glad to see them still believing in God and having hope. I really hope that this flooding would stop. I think Mr. McAllister put this up because we learned about Pacific Islands.
I also think that the melting of ice due to global warming has affected the rising of sea level. I feel very sorry for these people. This island is their home, their only home, and the home of their ancestors. I don't think that it would be easy for them to adapt to a new life in the industrialized world. Of course it is possible but I feel that it would be a hard transition. They have no idea about it. However I suppose it is necessary if they are to survive. I hope that they will adapt to their new life quickly with the aid of the woman islander who came to the mainland.
I think Mr McAllister put this blog on because we have just been studying about the islands in Melanesia, Polynesia, and Micronesia. The islanders have come across a huge conflict that would change their lives drastically. This relates to something we have done in class because we have been studying about the atolls and such.
We always say the global warming will destroy earth, etc. However, seeing these videos gave me a stronger re-impression to this idea. Actually people are being displaced from their traditional homes, and where they go to are where chaos exist. I feel very sorry for them in simple words. Worst of all, it is irreversable, or irreversable in short term at least. I think Mr. Mac posted this blog because he wanted us to be aware of that people really are being displaced from their homes due to the global warming(I believe). This blog also relates to our social studies class because it is talking about people of Oceana being displaced, and although we are learning about Oceana, this information is new to us and we never heard of it from the text book yet.
I was shoked to hear this because the islands are so beautiful, but more important, they are home to many. They are like refuges that have to leave their homes due to the sinking of the islands. I think that this is caused by mainly global warming.
In the Japanese news, it showed how polar bears are dieing from golbal warming and how the ice is melting. I thougth if all the ice is melting, where would it go? The water is raising and that could be why the islands are sinking.
I think that we are learning about this because we are learning about the Pacific islands in class.
That was me (jennifer carrillo)
I feel really bad for the islanders on the sinking islands. The island is a great sanctium for them and they are suffering from the loss of the land. The trees are collasping one by one because the water is rotting their roots. The gardens are also rotten and people have to feast on fish, coconuts, and canned food from abandoned boats. In the video, a man was showing the documentor that his granfathers house was located on the land that was covered with water. I noticed that scientists weren't giving effort in this situation, even though many people are suffering from the natural effect. Their always talking about global warming. The ice from the north pole and the south pole drift down to the center of the earth and the water piles over the surface of the islands that are small and probably made of corals. But, they haven't made an effort towards that problem. I would like to encourage the scientists to continue on their investigation on global warming and try to look for more reasons why the disaster is happening.
