Bush medal for Dalai Lama alarms China
by Tim Reid in Washington http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article2658653.ece
President Bush will this week become the first sitting US President to appear publicly with the Dalai Lama, a move that has alarmed China at a time of increased tensions between Tibetan monks and Beijing.
Mr Bush will also play host to Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader at the White House tomorrow before attending a ceremony on Wednesday where the Dalai Lama will be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the US Congress’s highest civilian honour.
In their two previous meetings, Mr Bush – like other presidents – met the Dalai Lama in private to avoid offending China, which accuses him of being a separatist intent on winning Tibetan independence from Beijing.
The Dalai Lama’s congressional award and US visit have been condemned by Beijing, which accused Congress of “interfering in China’s internal affairs”. Last month Beijing warned Germany that bilateral ties had been damaged after Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, met the Dalai Lama in Berlin. He also met John Howard, the Australian Prime Minister, in June.
Mr Bush will make a short speech at the medal ceremony on Wednesday, an appearance that represents a delicate diplomatic balancing act for the President. He is keen to court China as an economic partner but has also made freedom and democracy a significant theme of his presidency.
Last month he warned Hu Jintao, the Chinese President, at the Apec meeting in Sydney that he planned to attend the ceremony, in an attempt to defuse Chinese anger. At the same meeting, Mr Bush also told Mr Hu that he would attend the Olympic Games in Beijing next year.
The White House has also played down the significance of Mr Bush’s attendance at the award ceremony, saying that he has appeared at every other Congressional Gold Medal event. In his brief speech, Mr Bush will praise the Dalai Lama as a “great spiritual leader”, but will also state that he is not seeking Tibetan independence.
Dana Perino, Mr Bush’s spokesman, said that Mr Bush understood “that the Chinese have concerns about this”. The Dalai Lama’s US visit comes amid growing tensions between Beijing and Tibetan monks after China introduced new laws on reincarnation, an important element of Buddhist faith. Beijing said last month that living Buddhas are no longer allowed to be reincarnated without permission from the atheist Communist Government.
Previous recipients of the Congressional Gold Medal include Mother Teresa and Nelson Mandela. Tony Blair was awarded it four years ago but never collected it because Downing Street believed the ceremony would have reinforced his politically damaging relationship with Mr Bush.
After the award, the Dalai Lama, who has lived in exile in India since 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule, will make a speech on the West Lawn of Congress.
A unique decoration
— The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest civilian award in the US
— It was first given to George Washington, in 1776, and since then there have been about 300 awarded
— The presentation of each medal has to be approved by a two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives and in the Senate
— Once the award is approved, the US Mint is commissioned to produce a unique design, based on the achievements of the individual
— Past medal designs have included a scene from the Snoopy cartoons for Charles Schultz, their creator, and a sprinter, for Jesse Owens, the four-time Olympic gold medallist

finally you posted another blog!
If president bush is repeating over and over to china that he is not supporting separation between tibet and China then why don't they believe him? Is it because of how he interfered in Iraq are they afraid he will do that in China too? I don't really understand what the award is though and why the Dalai Lama is getting it.
does only the USA award it and if so why to a tibetan monk?
I think Dalai Lama deserved the Congressional Gold Medal because he has been a spiritual leader of Tibet fighting for his country's own independence, and that is a true patriot. He is even in danger of getting executed and still he protests. The gold medal is a great award, and I just think he deserved it. He is fighting for his religion and for his country's independence without fearing the consequences that might come. I think this blog was posted because we are learning about China and Tibet is a country west to it, and China influences Tibet very much. This relates to the notes we took and the group activities we did. We learned about Tibet in class a little, and this blog gives an example of how China influences Tibet. It also shows an example of a religious leader of Tibet.
So it's basically about China getting mad because the US gave this GOLD medal to this guy called Dalai Lama, whoever the heck he is. I don't mind, nor really care because it’s none of my business. Bush is giving this special GOLD medal to this guy that’s sticking to Buddhism or something like that. China is worried that other countries are interfering with their problems and affairs and so they get sort of hostile. Think of the contrast, the exact same country that is trying to get some honor onto their name in economics is accusing countries of butting into their affairs.

I think that this was chosen to say how much the communism is in desperation. Other countries have almost ganged up on them and that was exactly what happened in the Korean War. Chineese communist government leaders are afraid that other countries are trying to seize the small, poor countries that are under Chinese oppression.
-
This relates to what we are studying in class because we are learning about China and about all this communism and stuff about China.
Dalai lama deserves to get the award becaues he is seeking help from other nations.I think that the united states should rethink about what they are going to do so that the dont cause war or problems between each country.
Hello 02388 here
Wow... I'm pretty surprised about this. Bush is stepping on eggshells right now. One wrong move and the relationship between US and China may be ruined. I can understand why Hu Jin Tao and China was shocked with the awarding of this medal. Bush's choice to give this medal may have been rash and unwise. He is testing on China's patience during tensions between China and the Tibetan Monks. It may result in more economic relation problems. And, it does imply that Bush may be supporting the independence of Tibet. Let's just hope Dalai can continue to pursue freedom for his fellow Tibetans. I think this article was chosen because it was a shock to America and China's political relations and a signal of support for the independence of Tibet. It marks an important push by America that may result in some more problems. By this the Chinese government may tighten their iron grip on Tibetans. This relates to the class on the subject we are learning right now China. Particularly we are studying the revolts that are being and have been made by Chinese citizens crying for freedom or death. Dalai Lama may be the next "Gandhi" for Tibet. Who knows what may be? Well, thanks for the article!!!
Dalai Lama may have deserved the Congressional Gold Medal since he has been fighting for his own country's freedom, and freedom to the people in his country. But then what about China? They won't be so happy because they don't want Tibet to be independent. And I mean those Chinese governmet! The Chinese government might even dislike Bush more because of this. But then it is the right thing to give an award to a person with that much bravery and the love for his country. We just learned about the relationship between China and Tibet in Social Studies today (which is also going to be on the test tomorrow (A-hem!)) So this awarding to this man called Dalai Lama may have been good from Tibetians and other people's view, but it wouldn't be such a nice thing to show to the Chinese government, would it now? -_-^
This article was very cool in a way. Dalai Lama, even though in exile from his country still fights for the freedom of Tibet. I think that he does need to receive this award because he worked really hard for something he wanted to achieve and even with the Chinese government disliking him and what he does he knows that the really wants to achieve this. I think that China’s making too big of a deal over a medal for the Dalai Lama. The award does not mean an honorary citizenship but a medal that acknowledges his work. I think that he must be seriously compassionate about human rights and the freedom of Tibet. I understand that Tibet might be a useful land to China, but the people in Tibet will one day break free. So, I think that instead of them breaking free, they should just let Tibet be free. China knows want a bad ruler will do to its people, but still they do not learn from the mistake of the Mongols but the mistakes of their own. I think that Bush should stop being the piggy in the middle and start being a person who has a definite choice. But there is the problem that Bush risked his country’s economic development with China. I think this article was chosen because we are learning about China and its past and about its failures. It relates because chapter three is about China today and it talks about Tibet and its root of the control of its country by the Manchus then by the Chinese.
Hmm, I’m not really sure whether I understand this article or not… I think basically, the article is about President Bush and Dalai Lama appearing in public for the first time, a move which causes the Chinese to be frightened because of the tension between the Tibetan monks and Beijing. Dalai Lama is presented a gold medal called Congressional Gold Medal, which is the US Congress’s highest civilian honor. Is it right?
This article is really tense. I mean, President Bush and Dalai Lama might have just made China against those countries! Even worse, China could have punished the Tibetans for what Dalai Lama had done! Wow! However, I do admire Dalai Lama’s strong will for freedom. I can see that he really cares for his own country and that he will do anything, absolutely anything, to get his country free. I think that he really earned the medal. However, it kind of sucks that he was doing it for his country and the Tibetan monks… If only he were a Christian…
Anyway, I wonder why China won’t let Tibet free when nearly everyone knows what Dalai Lama is doing. China is sometimes really stubborn, and I think that the stubbornness could someday harm China greatly.
I understand 100% why we were asked to read on this article and to do a blog on it. Today, in my social studies class, we’ve just read about Tibet and Dalai Lama. I think our teacher wished to give us more information about it.
does president know about the enimy
because the enimy for afganistan
GO BUSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am an american and am really proud of my presidend. Bush will be going out and I am sad about that. But I think Bush doesent want to fizzle. Since we have been studing China's neghbors in class I know who Dalai Lama is and so could put all the information together. I say "boo china" they have been unfair and downright MEAN to Tibet. So go win some more buddies Dalai Lama and "break,a,way..." (Hillary Duff) thank you MM for the new blog.
I don't get the whole view or the perfect view, but it seems that China is kind of mad about Mr. Bush, because of the GOLD medal or something like that. I suppose Dalai Lama is getting the medal, and China's government doesn't really like Dalai Lama to get it. I think China is mad about this whole situation is that the leader for Tibet or at least leader that fights for Tibet's independence, is getting the Gold medal, and i think China's government is thinking that Bush is helping Dalai Lama to get independence with China. I think it might be in that situation, but actually i kind of think that is wrong too, because it is a medal to give who is a strong leader in a normal people's view, without having no belief of something or opinion.
I just think this was our blog, because we just learned about Tibet, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macao that was independence, but that is not any more.

Passion and zeal, these two words were like the repeating gong on my ears. However, they finally achieved a part in the world news. Dalai Lama was wanted his nation’s independence so bad, which bought the Chinese Communist Government’s hatred. Fleeing to the U.S. however, I think he is like the fish who met a shore after some distant journey from the barrens. However, what really concerned me was the fact that politicians really do have hard times living at their will. For example, Bush had to go through some complications to hand a simple award to an individual. Giving an award, how complicate could it be? As a matter of two nations, however, I understand its complications. There is no good for the U.S. to break up the relationship with China, and neither it is good to do something that will enrage China. Keeping the relationships between nations is an important matter, especially if it a massive one like China. China can’t be ignored any second, and I still wonder if George Bush is doing the right thing to award Dalai Lama. Reason being is that even though it wasn’t a public award, still, it became public. If everybody in the world, such as me in Korea, knows about that, no questions about China. However, putting aside the relationship, I feel good that I am in an independent country for Tibet is still shouting for independency and my ancestors once did that before too, and there could have been possibilities of us still being a colony of another nation! I thin Mr. McAllister posted this news to inform us about how tense the situation is, and how hard it is to keep relationships non-hostile, and how good it is for us to be free from other nations.
WOW again!!! Bush made something again. I don't highly or exactly understand but I understand what he has done. He will make a move that would alarm China and also become the first sitting US president that appear publicy with Dalai Lama. Also I extremly think Dalai Lama must or have right to get the award. I was so surprised that there was a person like Dalai Lama. I liked about details that he is an very active and strongly leader or the symbol of Tibet's freedom protest. Also that bush sayed he is a spiritua leader, I think too. Just after that sentence in the blog, I also think Bush had an good decision. He sayed that " but will also state that he is not seeking Tibetan independence. I would like to have more information on him about Dalai Lama on Tuesday(G Block). Also still I agree with Dalai Lama, I could feel how China would feel that US President is giving an award;;; not just papaer or interview a GOLD AWARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!That is why China is very angry or mad. To China it is like dog and cat fighting. There is one cat name Charlie and he protest to cat for freedom and dogs are giving a gold medal to Charlie. This was not really interesting to me but I was surprised and got to think about more thoughts how little giving a gold medal could make a country with most population mad. Thank you for reading my article.
-DKB-
P.S I'm so excited about the Japan war game!!!!!! Thank you for letting us have some fun. (EDO will win)
I believe that Taiwan leader Dalai Lama deserved Gold Medal for the spiritual award because he was fighting for his own countries independence. This relates to the classwork that we did about Taiwan about Dalai Lama
When I researched for homework about countries near China, I found that Tibet was not one of China’s nations. Tibet was a country which has two thousand years of history and own language and national characteristics. China consolidated Tibet forcibly for the reason of unifying minority races. To destroy Tibet’s traditional ethnos, China is arresting Tibetan woman and give them feticide and sterilization. One of people who is most popular and who conduct actively a campaign for Tibet’s freedom is Dalai Lama. Fortunately, the article says U.S. is helping Dalai Lama to freedom of Tibet. It is good to take of such as violence like China’s action to Tibetans.
I agree that the Dalai Lama should have gotten the Congressional Gold Medal because he is trying to help his country with all he can. He might even get caught and executed by the Chinese but he still constantly tries to help his country by meeting other countries. China may be alarmed that Bush awarded the Dalai Lama but Bush is trying to not make China mad and I think that is a good decision because that is avoiding a conflict with China and America .I think the Dalai Lama got awarded for his courage and hard work to try and help his country. I think this blog came like at the right time because we just learned about Tibet and its problems with China. I don’t get why the Chinese government is so cruel. They even threatened Taiwan if they become independent. Why are they like that? What a cruel world.
Mr. McAllister!! FINALLY.........!
-_-
I remember you talking about this during Social Studies Class one time. :) I think that Dalai Lama is a really funny name. Well, that's not the point. I go for Lama's side because I really want Tibet to become an independent country, separate from China. I think that the reason why I have such a strong feeling about this is because since China is a communist country, it means that Tibet is also part of the communist society, and they get effected by it. I wish that they could just be their own independent country, and believe and talk about freely about what they belive, because I think that political freedom is a right. Well, one thing that I don't like about Lama is that he likes Buddhism too much. I wish he'd be a Christian so he could try and declare the independence from China. I feel the same way towards Taiwan. I hope that one day, they could really become an independent country from China so that Missionaries can go there, and perhaps somehow affect China, too. I think that the communist government sucks. People should have the right to use the freedom that God gave to us, and we should have the freedom to preach about God to others.
Wow! I have never knew President Bush was that competent to have the courage of encouraging Daima Lama publicly even though it can give America and China a very damaging relationship. On wednesday Mr. Bush will give Daima Lama a Congressional Gold Medal in the white house. I believe Daima Lama deserves it because he fights for country even though he is in the range of being executed that is why he is known as the true patriot. The Tibetan Monks should never be accused for believing their own spiritual religion. They have the human rights. I assume that President Bush is actually stating to the chinese governments that is never a right thing to forbid somebody's believes in their religion. I wish China can finally realizes the horrible events they have caused and make new laws of preventing unfreedom religion believes.
Mr. Mcallister bloged this news because we are learning about the chinese governments and how they make their own laws. This Articles reflect on my life because i realize that i am thankful of priasing my god when ever i want with all my freedom.
China is angry because the US gave a medal to Dalai Lama, the leader of Tibet. Bush is giving Dalai Lama the golden medal. China is worried that other countries might interfere with their problems because of that China get aggressive.
In my opinion, Dalai Lama did deserve the award because he wasn’t doing it for HIS own good but for his country’s independence. However there might be some problems with China because they don’t want Tibet to be independent. So it’s a controversy. One side (Tibet) likes this “choice” but another (china) would dislike this. It’s brave of Dalai Lama how he knows the consequences but still tried his best to help his country. I don’t really get China for getting angry and not wanting to let Tibet be independent.
Mr. McAllister=] You finally uploaded a blog! I thought you forgot about them, but I'm happy to see that you uploaded one!
I'm quite surprised that president Bush has made a big issue between China and the United States. If I was president Bush, I would be much more of a coward to even think of giving an award to Dalai Lama. However, I think president Bush awarded Dalai Lama because United States, is a free country and wants more countries to become free, not communists, like South Korea. I am just hoping that it won't affect the two countries in negative ways. I remember Mr.McAllister talking about Dalai Lama in class time, but I didn't know his name until now. Even though it might affect the relationship between China and United States, for once, I agree with what president Bush did. I don't understand why China is so eager in keeping Taiwan as part of China. After learning about communist countries and governments, I dislike the ways and ideas that they use. I am very glad to be living in a uncommunist, free country, and I am hoping that Taiwan would stay independent and free like South Korea. I think that China should give Taiwan the right and choice because they are practically an independent country, and I don't think that they belong to China anymore. Also, I am on Dalai Lama's side because he is wanting for independece. I think each individuals should have the freedom of speech because many people have different opinions and we don't think all the same. I hope Dalai Lama keeps on shouting for independence and gets rewarded, not minding of what China thinks.
I was interested in Dalai Lama so I looked up his name on the internet. I knew that he received many awards, but I didn't know he was that much of a highly-respected person. Also, some interesting facts that I found was that Dalai Lama is not his real name, but his real name is Tenzin Gyatso. Another interesting fact that caught my attention is that his nickname is known as the alive Buddha. If I did not learn about him in Social Studies, I might have never realized that there is a person called Dalai Lama. I am very interested on this topic and wherever I hear the name 'Dalai Lama', this name would catch my attention.
Thank you very much for reading my comment=]
Lauren Kim
This story is basically about President Bush giving Dalai Lama a Gold Medal for being a good leader of Tibet, and Chinese government isn't pleased with that. I know that Dalai Lama was a great person, but I'm not sure if he did really good enough to deserve a Gold Medal. Maybe Bush is just cheering Dalai Lama. Bush also warned the Chinese Government to stop treating other small countries badly. I think this will help Tibet and other small nations like Tibet will be free from China soon.
I'm not sure that I really understand this post. It kind of seems like it's talking about 2 different things at the same time. It's saying that the Dalai Lama is getting the Congressional Gold Medal thingy. That medal is given to people that are like sort of peace makers. I think that it sounds like he does deserve that medal for some things that he's done in the past. I'm sure that would be very hard too because he's in a communist country. The only problem is what he did would be like way better if he was a christian instead of ...I think he's like Buddhist but it would be awesome if he was christian because then he could be like a missionary and a peace maker and a lot of good things could happen.
Another thing that's going on is ..I think that they're saying that some people aren't trusting Bush that well. I'm not really sure why, but he's doing all this so that he can win their trust.
The last thing that's going down is that Tibet wants to be free. This was a very confusing post for me but it might be because I've been awake since like yesterday and I'm really tired, but I tried to figure it all out and I think we might have mentioned the Dalai Lama in class once so that's probably how it ties in with our class. I hope that I understood this post correctly and thanx for posting another blog. haha
I think that the Dalai Lama has a lot of courage to keep travelling around trying to get support for his country, but he is doing a dangerous job as well. I'm not really sure if what the Dalai Lama is doing is working well or not, but I think that he is setting a good example for other leaders of countries because he could have just gone somewhere else and lived his own life, not doing anything for his country. But instead he is fighting at whatever it takes so that his country will gain freedom once again. I think that Bush is on rough grounds right now because he doesn't want to seem like he wants the other country to have their own freedom because he has ties with China, but he is still giving their leader an award.... I think that everybody, especially American citizens will have different views and perspectives on what he's doing. I think that Bush should pick which side he is on and stick to it. I want to find out what will happen at the award ceremony and how people will react.
China is basically getting mad at the US because theyre giving a medal to the Dalai Lama for good citizenship. I guess they would have a reason to be mad because they put him in exile, but hes out there trying to get support for his country, while they kicked him out for the very same reason. And on top of that, not only is he getting much support, hes also won a gold medal for being preaching about his country. The Dalai Lama is doing a really dangerous job that could get him killed. If by any chance he does return to his country, he could be put into jail. He can be hated for what hes doing or he can be welcomed. THe thing is that, the US is in a really tough postion. Espcially Bush. The US has a good relationship with China in business and all, and China may be Americas largest import. BUt when Bush gave the medal to the Dalai Lama, this could have been a really big concern for the Chinese goverenment. Because since the US buys alot of products from China, China doesnt want to lose their "money" but also, when Bush gave the medal to the Dalai Lama, they felt angered.
IF i was president BUsh i would have hesitated in giving the medal. This is because the ties with china could be broken, and China could start distrusting the US. I personally wouldnt want that. Especailly with a large country with a large military. China is really rising in economic power right now, and by being president; giving the medal wouldnt be the wisest choice.
Bush is in a tough postion. Hes in between China and the Dalai Lama. Hes trying to be favorable to China, but as well hes giving an award to the Dalali Lama for being a good citizen towards his counrty. I think that the Dalai Lama is really courageous for doing a thing like that. Hes going into other countries to get support while hes in exile for that reason. Whats worse is that President Bush gave the Dalai Lama a award for being supportive of Tibet. Bush should really get his priorities straight and think about whats more important. The relationship with China, or an award for the Dalai Lama. If other countries start doing the same, and follow in Bush's steps, China is going to get aggresive. Theyre going to do whatever it takes to get rid of the Dalai Lama, and stop all the controversy about Tibet becoming a free country once more.
I get why China would be upset about this situation. Here, you put a person in exile of his own country to try and gain independence, and hes out there trying to gain support of other countries. And then, the US gives this person a REALLY big award. that would make me mad. This could create conflict among the chinese government and the US economically.
Finally you've posted the blog!!!!For this blog, I think Dalai Lame deserves the Golden Medal because he is a great leader who protests for his community even though he is in danger of getting executed. And I think its dumb that China not believing United States. And I think China should pay a lot of tention to Tibet to not make them protest against China.
Thanx for the blog~~
I think China is not pleased because Bush awarded Dalai Lama and Lama is the leader of Tibet.
But, China wants Tibet to be part of them so China is angry at Bush.
Chinese government thinks that Bush trying to encourage Dalai Lama to make Tibet an independent country.
To receive the gold medal is a complete honor! The Dalai Lama is a very hard working religious man who is standing up for his country. I think he deserves to get the award because he is a man that can be executed by his own country but is still trying to get other countries to help his country and himself to retrieve their own land back to an independent country. Why is China so mad at the Dalai Lama? Well…probably because he is trying to get Tibet as an independent country again, I guess. But I think if I were a Tibetan person, I would be proud of Dalai Lama for standing up for them and for risking his life to get their land back. I just hope that Bush doesn’t start another war because of Tibet. I think Bush should watch out for the relationship between China and the U.S. If he doesn’t, than things might get worse between the U.S. and China than Tibet and China. Sometimes I believe that Bush shouldn’t get into things that might destroy the U.S. But still, I guess Bush is a caring person so he wants to help out everyone who is in need. Since, I think, Bush is a Christian he might just be asking God to lead him to the right things to do. God has a plan for Tibet, China, the U.S. and us so we shouldn’t be too worried on what will happen eventually. But I wished Dalai Lama would become a Christian instead of a Buddhist monk so that God can help him achieve his beliefs. I hope that God will do good things through Dalai Lama, President Bush, etc…
Anyways…hope everything turns out well!! ;D
Finally YOU POSTED ANOTHER BLOG!!! He HE, anyway welcum bak from NYL (or is it MYP?) and stuff like dat. Anyway, I think it is a mistake for United States to interfiere with China's affairs, because such a move can cause tention. I believe that Geoge W. Buch,no no sorry BUSH, should not mess with other country's internal problems and divisions. HOWEVER, I am no political expert. Still I think that this kind of moves should be avoided. Dalai Lama, however, I think deserves Congressional Gold Medal because of his life risking moves and darness to bring "capitalistic freedom" into China. I hope this will not trigger any wars or divisions in China, for it can cause millions to suffer.
To me, it was very hard to understand this article.
I think he deserve a Gold Medal because he fought for the country.
I could understand why he deserve a Gold Medal. I think he have to .
i don't really understand about this but only thing that i understood is that bush don't like china and gave warned to the president hu jinto and he prefer dalai lama? i guess,... is bush racist?
Dalai lama deserves the Medak because he was leader of tibet fighting for his counry and if it wasn't for tibet, china might be attacted by europeian countries and many west countries
Its an very interesting article because both sides has reasonable statements. The United States and China is having a conflict because of a man Dalai Lama. I understand Dalai wanting to spread out his opinion, but I dont think he had to do it in public so that everyone can know. On the other side, China because Lama is their citizen, and he is going to another non-communist country and talking against their governmental system. But, on Bush's side, even though I think president Buse didn't really need to give him an gold metal thing, I think Bush didn't do anything wrong. However, I think this problem solves out its way and the realtionship between two country remain clam and peaceful. I think the governmental problems are always complicated and hard.
Anyway, this article was chosen beacuse Mr. McAllister wants his strudents to know about what's happening around the world. And this connects to our lessons in class because we learnd a lot about Communism and China. I learnd more about China and The US' realtionship. I think reading these kind of articles helps me understand better because it is more realistic, and I can actually apply them to what I have been learning. :)
i dont really get all this politic stuff, even though i like hearing politicians do their stuff. if i read the article right Dalai Lama is some kind of holy man fighting for independence in Tibet, the roof of the world, from China! And if i also thought right Mr. green bush is supporting him with his power making china mad. in my opinion i think their both mad about power but i also think that dalai lama isnt doing the right thing either. Dalai Lama should have his path straight if he is going to actually make his country independent.
I have no idea why America or Bush felt like giving the congressional gold medal to Dalai Lama! MADNESS. He is literally getting the chinese mad and anguished in anger!
I dont really understand what is happening but is bush not supporting the seperation between tibet and china? i think this is madness.
SORRY FOR THE LATE REPLY
I think Bush made the right choice to honor the Dalai Lama for he has been a great leader, standing out for independence. If it wasn't for him, then Tibet would have still have had any hope. However, with the leadership to having want independence, didn't want to follow the ways how China lived. And already, many other countries hoped to be indepedent from China such as Taiwan and Hong Kong. Tibet didn't want China's communist rules and their beliefs, which opposed from the people in Tibet. I think that Tibet should become indepedent and China should stop keep countries who are forced to be part of China. I think this act influenced Tibet and China both very much. People need to have freedom to live, but not get forced by Chinese. This might have an impact on China's and US's relationship but this shouldn't decide whether US goes for Tibet's side; Bush was just fair. I would be on Tibet's side because I think it would be very uncomfortable living in China's rule.
well anyways, thanks for the new blog and i hope to get another one
and i like the japanese shogun game
for B block OSAKA PLEASE GIVE US MORE MOVES!!!!!!!!!!!!
we honor the emperor
Whoa! This is a suprise! Bush is in danger. If he does one mistake he can ruin the relationship with China and US. Even if i was Hu Jin Tao, then I would be shocked with this medal. I think Bush's choice was wrong. I mean he is trying to test China's patience when Tibetan Monks and China arn't doning well together? Also if president Bush is repeting to China that he is not suporting the separation why don't they believe in him?I'm not sure why Bush made this dicision, however, I think that it wasn't a right one,,,
B BLOCK OSAKA RULES!!!!
EMPEROR PLEASE GIVE US
MORE RICE AND MOVES AND GOOD FORTUNE!!!!!!
That seems interesting. I think that when (notice I didn't say if) china finds out about this, they will be offended. I hate to think what could happen if the Chinese took the offence too strongly. It seems interesting that President Bush would give the tibetan man that medal. I also see why he would get it. He was trying to free Tibet from Chinese rule.
P.S. Edo, Sadly, I don't think that you will win. Unless you suddenly get a burst of armies, you're proabably going to become slaves. And Shikoku, WE ARE NOT GOING TO LOSE TO YOU. NEVER!!!

I believe that Dalai Lama deserved the award because he his a spiritual leader even though he has been exiled from his own country. President Bush should be careful about what he is saying because one wrong thing and the Chinese will be so furious that they will do something incredously bad. I can relate this to man name Gandhi who acted in a very similar way that Dalai Lama just that he didn't get thrown out of his country,
In my opinion the congressional Gold medal award was something that the Dalai Lama deserved because he is defending his own country and making the independence between china and tibet, I think that he truly has pride in his own country. But as far as Bush I do not think he is a strong pollitical leader in my opinoin he has not given his full potential and because he was elected again I am expecting something more than just what he did to Iraq
I don't know why Chinese government got tibet. Tibet has their own culture and language.Tibet land like high mountain and they can't farm work.In Chinese history textbook said. Tibet is our land because when tang dynasty got Tibet. Tibetian is one of ethic of China.Chinese government let all leader of Tibet come to Beijing and talk about land problem. They dropped the airplane and killed all leader of Tibet. They said this is a accident. So Tibet have no leader except Dalai Lama.

I feel that this is a good move that President Bush is doing. The Dalai Lama is a extremely intelligent, honorable man and I feel he deserves to get this Congressional Gold Medal. He has moved many hearts in many countries and if I were in the Congress or Senate I would have raised my hand in approval as well. I do know that China will disapprove of President Bush's actions but I am not really sure. He is being a risk-taker here. He did say that the gold medal does not mean that he is supporting him or anything so I guess its okay. It would have been better to give the medal after the whole problem between the Tibetans and Chinese are over. However we never know when that is going to end and maybe the Dalai Lama won't be around for much longer. If I were to make a final decision I would have done the same as President Bush. The Dalai Lama is an extraordinary man. I think this article was chosen because many of us know the Dalai Lama and President Bush. Also, it would have raised people’s curiosity. We would also wonder how the Chinese will react. The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest civilian award presented in the U.S so people would have reacted. I myself never knew that the Dalai Lama was so approved by the President, Senate, and House of Representatives. George Washington and Mother Teresa have also gotten the award as well! It relates to something we’ve done in class because we have learned about China before, and the Dalai Lama is having trouble with the Chinese Government. Also, President Bush is known all around the world. Surely every student in the class knows something about him. Every student in the class can write about this article because they know at least one of them so I think that’s why Mr. McAllister chose this article.
I think China is overreacting against this situation. Dalai Lama is achieving Congressional Gold Medal for he has been a great spiritual leader. He has been fighting for the freedon of Tibet. However, Tibet is the land of China, and therefore China is mad at America awarding Dalai Lama.
Dalai Lama deserved the Congressional Gold Medal and he got this award because he was a honorable man. But China were not happy with this incident that he got this award. I think it was a good choice to give him a award because he fought for his own country's freedom. And China is quite over with this incident, I don't think China have showed their bad minds like this much. We know a lot things about President Bush and also some people has bad feeling about him because of war and stuff. But in this case we all know that he was quite right and he was sensible. This article was pretty interesting because it helped me to got to know positive way about President Bush.
I don't get how US gave the gold medal to Dalai Lama. He should mind his own country's business. Also, some Chinese don't think that he deserves the gold medal. I think Chinese shouldn't be too mad about the medal, because still some thinks that Dalai Lama deserves it as a religious leader.
i think the dalai lama deserved the Gold medal because he fighting for independent of his own country and i think it right thing to do. i also think he is brave. i wonder if i was him i can work for my country even i know i am in danger. the china might get angry becasuse the Bush gave him a medal adn also they thoungt Bush also want the fredom of the Tibet. but i am not sure why china care about the other countey's independence so much.
I dont think I realy understand about this article fully or not,,,but I think I get the bacic idea of it
President bush told China over and over that they should free Tibet and let them have independence and become their own goverment or country. And President Bush gve a Golden Medal to a monk Named Dalai Lama and how they came out in public for the first time. Also the chinese were upset about this because the Dalai Lama was going around and saying to free tibet. I think that China should free tibet, but I also think that it was wrong for President bush to hand out such a high honered valuble medal to the Dalai Lama for doing something that wasnt that big. I also think that this relates to cladd because we are learnig about china and its Goverment and this connects to the goverment showing haw they realy value land and how there are many conflicts going on with in the goverment
I don't get whole things about this article but I think Dalai Lama deserved to get the award becaues he has been fighting for his own country's freedom, and freedom to the people in his country.
the dalai lama was a big influence to america and he was able to let america know about the troubles in Tibet, therfore i think the Dalai lama deserved the medal. the dalai lama gave up a lot of things to do what he did, i think it would have bean hard for him to do this. it would have bean hard for the dalai lama to convince Mr. Bush, because the dalai lama wasn't a political leader. Also it would have bean hard to even get the government's attention. regardless of these obstructions, he suceeded, therfore i think he must have bean very wise.
Check point
this blog is kind of confusing to me but heres what i know. i think tiwas right that dalai lama got the congressional award because he was brave enough to come out and fight for tibet's freedom and probably noone else would've done it. it might've been a little too much for bush to give out such an honorable high award beacsue some people might not think that dalai lama deserves it and a fight mite break out or something, but anyway dalai lama did wat was best for tibet and he was strong.
